  1. Originally a part of several ancient and historic African
  2. empires, Niger was reached by Europeans in the late 18th Century
  3. and between 1900 and 1922 Niger became a French colony.  On
  4. August 3, 1960 Niger became independent and in the next year
  5. signed a bilateral agreement with France retaining economic and
  6. cultural ties.  Hamani Diori was Niger's first President and was
  7. ousted in a 1974 coup.  Severe drought and famine struck in 1973
  8. and 1974 and again in 1975.
